Machine Shop Supervisor

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Machine Shop Supervisor to join our team. The Machine Shop Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the machine shop, ensuring that production goals are met safely, efficiently, and according to quality standards. The ideal candidate must have strong leadership abilities, excellent technical skills, and a proven track record of driving continuous improvement initiatives. Additionally, you will provide support to the machine shop at our Michigan Plants in the U.S.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Supervise Machine Shop Personnel
    • Oversee the daily activities of the machine shop, including production schedules, machine setup and maintenance.
    • Ensure adherence to quality standards, safety protocols, and manufacturing procedures.
    • Monitor machine performance and troubleshoot issues to minimize downtime and optimize production efficiency.
  • Personnel Management
    • Lead and supervise a team of machine operators and machinists and support staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
    • Work closely with HR department for recruitment, performance evaluation, development, address any performance issues or disciplinary matters.
    • Assign tasks and responsibilities to ensure workload distribution and efficiency.
    • Foster a positive work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Production Planning and Coordination
    • Collaborate with production planners, engineers, and other department personnel to develop production schedules and prioritize work orders.
    • Coordinate material availability and resource allocation to meet production targets and customer demands.
    • Monitor production processes to identify areas for improvement and implement solutions to optimize efficiency and productivity.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Calibration
    • Collaborate closely with the Maintenance team to ensure the highest levels of performance and precision in the machine shop.
    • Supervise the maintenance, repair, and calibration of machine tools and equipment to ensure optimal performance and accuracy standards.
    • Work closely with the Maintenance team to schedule preventive maintenance activities and coordinate repairs to minimize disruptions to production.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Implement quality control measures to ensure products meet specifications and regulatory requirements.
    • Conduct inspections to identify defects, non-conformities, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Implement corrective actions and preventive measures to address quality issues and improve overall product quality.
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Ensure safety regulations and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for all personnel.
    • Promote safety awareness and compliance with safety standards.
    • Investigate accidents, near misses, and safety incidents, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Travel
    • Travel up to 25% of the time is required.


Qualifications:

  • Post secondary certifications in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, trade schools, or related field.
  • A minimum of 7 – 10 years of hands-on experience in metal machining, specializing in CNC operations (Mills and Lathes), accompanied by at least 5 years of management/supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role within a machine shop or manufacturing environment.
  • Must have hands on experience with all types of manual machines (lathes/mills) and various CNC machines including setting up and running CNC Milling / Turning centers.
  • Prior experience with Mazak and Hyundai WIA mills and lathe is an asset.
  • Strong technical knowledge of machining processes, CNC programming including manual CNC (and 2D and 3D program) and machine tool operation.
  • Proficiency in reading engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Extensive experience with machining of various materials, including stainless steel, mild steel, and aluminum.
  • Strong background in CNC Programming and troubleshooting for 2-4 axis CNC Machining Centers etc.
  • Solid understanding of CADCAM, Master-Cam and GD&T
  • Excellent leadership, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations (OHSA), ESA, and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with ERP systems, and MS-Office.
